Last Thursday, we loaded up the camper trailer for its first big trip ....10 days on the road, about 3000km travelled .... no major dramas, survived the rat plague and everyone is keen to go on another trip!!!!! Must have been good!
First up we drove an hour west of Qulipie (about 900kms west of us) for a friend's 40th ... the party was a three day event and it was so much fun to catch up with friends of old. On Monday we packed up and headed for the wild west .... 11 kids, 6 adults and 3 camper trailers .... double click on the photo collages if you would like to see them bigger ...
On Monday night we set up just outside Windorah on the beautiful Cooper's Creek ...
All the kids had a wonderful time exploring the banks of the mighty Cooper and the adults kicked back and enjoyed the serenity ... the big kids made their own fire and cooked damper, totally inedible, but they had fun!
Next morning we packed up and headed for Birdsville .... stopped in Windorah to top up on supplies, lollies!
Not much between Windorah and Birdsville but it was amazing to see the country looking so lush, an unusual sight. We spent 2 nights in Birdsville and enjoyed the shower and toilet ammenities block. On Wednesday we drove out to see Big Red, one of the largest of the 1100 sand dunes spread across the Simpson Desert ... we had to drive over a few sand dunes before reaching Big Red, was so much fun ...
Big Red was amazing, the photos don't do it justice ... everything is just so vast and it was unbelievable to see water ... the kids spent the entire time exploring and filling every crevice with red sand ...
That night was State of Origin which was watched at the Birdsville Pub ... on Thursday, we loaded up again for a long day in the car ... we headed south towards Innamincka, over 400kms of rough roads ... we stopped at the Cadelga ruins and then Cordillo Downs Shearing Shed, Australia's largest .... arrived safely at the Dig Tree and set up for our final two nights ...
Found a gorgeous camping spot right on the Cooper ... perfect for the kids to spend their days exploring ...
On Friday we drove in to Innamincka for a shower and had lunch at the Pub .... also explored the spot where Burke died ...
On Saturday, we packed up for the final time and pointed the car east .... we kept driving until we got home, at about 11pm that night ... crazy, but it was awfully nice to wake up on Sunday morning and not need to put on your boots to go to the loo!
Was a fabulous adventure, one we will all treasure forever ... never mind the 12 loads of washing now that we are home! Off to do some more folding, thanks for stopping by.
